You will be dragged kicking and screaming into the brutal world of Ross Mueller's captivating drama, "The Ghost Writer," where a child's murder sets the stage for a web of mystery, intrigue, deceit and manipulation. Directed by Jane Angharad, this production rapidly unfolds with complex layers of conflict and tension, promising a thrilling and psychologically twisted experience for Australian audiences.

A Riveting Plot Unveiled

In the heart of the narrative lies the tragic story of a murdered child, Brihanna (Emma Dalton) an illiterate mother, seeking justice by having her story ghost written to become a best seller. She strikes a deal with Publisher, Robert (Mark Langham) who appears to share her passion for the truth. Or does he have his own agenda and delusions of grandeur?

As Claudia, the ghost writer, steps into the picture, unexpected and critical complications arise. Not only is Claudia (Mel Day) the daughter of the publisher, she also finds herself entangled romantically with a prosecutor involved in the case (Shan-Ree Tan).

Mueller's 2008 play weaves a complex tale of relationships and secrets, offering a gripping and gritty exploration of the human condition.

Aesthetics that Set the Stage

James Smithers' set design adds a touch of elegance and drama to the production. The stage at Flight Path Theatre, designed for wintry action, becomes an integral part of the narrative. Rain falls around the actors, symbolizing the storm of emotions and events unfolding. It literally rains inside the theatre, an absolutely stunning visual representation of the oppression and chaos each character faces.

Captivating Character Portrayals

Emma Dalton's portrayal of Brihanna, the grieving mother seeking justice, is both poignant and powerful. Daltons stage presence is palpable, commanding attention even while sitting still and demolishing a durry and Woodstock can like a seasoned bogan. Yet, all is a rouse, Brihanna is far more rat cunning than her rough and illiterate demeanor first presents. Wonderful to watch.

Mel Day shines as Claudia, the spirited writer navigating family pressures, illness and personal dilemmas. Day expertly balances Claudia's seductiveness and unhinged "don't fuck with me" attitude with waifish fragility and torment.

Mark Langham delivers an unsettlingly convincing and teeth grinding performance as Robert, the shrewd Machiavellian publisher torn between business and family. Langham has us believing in his altruism, before flipping it on it's head and reveling his hard nosed and manipulative intentions.

Shan-Ree Tan captivates as Simon West, the subversive Prosecutor layered with mystery and intrigue. Tan is exceptionally present, always listening, always thinking, piecing together the chaos to extract the truth... or hide it... and what a voice, this man has a beautifully resonant set of pipes.
